Grastim 300mcg Injection contains filgrastim, a synthetic form of a naturally occurring protein that stimulates the bone marrow to produce more white blood cells—specifically neutrophils, which are essential for fighting infections. This medication is primarily used to reduce the duration and severity of neutropenia (a low white blood cell count) and its complications in patients undergoing chemotherapy for non-myeloid cancers.

In addition to its role during chemotherapy, Grastim is also valuable in other clinical situations where white blood cell counts are dangerously low. For example, it helps support patients with acute myeloid leukemia, severe chronic neutropenia, and those undergoing bone marrow transplants. It is also used to stimulate WBC production in leukapheresis procedures and in radiation exposure cases, where the bone marrow’s ability to regenerate blood cells is compromised. In advanced HIV infection, Grastim aids in minimizing infection risks by elevating neutrophil counts.

Filgrastim works by binding to specific cell surface receptors on hematopoietic (blood-forming) cells in the bone marrow, encouraging these cells to multiply and mature into functioning white blood cells. This significantly enhances the body’s ability to fight off infections, especially during vulnerable periods of chemotherapy or bone marrow suppression.

As with any potent medication, Grastim may cause side effects. The most commonly reported include bone pain, fever, rash, cough, shortness of breath, and nosebleeds. Inform your doctor if you have a history of kidney or liver disorders, sickle cell anemia, or bone-related conditions, as these may influence how your body responds to the treatment.
