Octride depot 30mg injection contains octreotide as its active ingredient. This synthetic compound is derived from somatostatin, a naturally occurring substance in the human body that inhibits the effects of certain hormones, including growth hormones. It is utilized to decrease the production of growth hormone in individuals with acromegaly, a condition characterized by excessive growth hormone production leading to enlarged hands, feet, and facial features, along with joint pain and other symptoms, particularly in cases where surgery, radiation, or alternative medications are not viable options.
Additionally, it is employed to manage diarrhea and flushing associated with carcinoid tumors, which are slow-growing tumors that release substances causing various symptoms, as well as vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting adenomas (VIP-omas), tumors in the pancreas that also release substances leading to symptoms. This medication is indicated to prevent complications following pancreatic surgery. Furthermore, it is prescribed to halt bleeding and protect against re-bleeding from ruptured gastro-esophageal varices in patients with chronic liver disease. It is also used to treat individuals with pituitary tumors that produce excessive thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) when other treatments, such as surgery or radiotherapy, are unsuitable or ineffective, and to bridge the gap until radiotherapy achieves its full effect after treatment.
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to octreotide or any of its other components. Notify your physician if you have gallstones, abnormal blood sugar levels, vitamin B12 deficiency, or liver diseases. Octride depot 30mg injection may reduce your heart rate, and very high doses could lead to irregular heart rhythms, so your doctor may regularly monitor your heart function throughout the treatment. Inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before starting the treatment.
