Zemdri is an antibiotic medicine used to treat serious infections of the bladder or kidneys.
Zemdri can cause serious or disabling side effects that may not be reversible. Zemdri should be used only for infections that cannot be treated with a safer antibiotic.
Zemdri may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Zemdri (plazomicin) is an antibiotic that is commonly used to treat kidney or bladder infections caused by certain bacteria.
Zemdri may also be used for other conditions as determined by your health care provider.
Zemdri may not be appropriate for some kidney or bladder infections, depending on which germs are causing the infection. Bacteria may have developed resistance to Zemdri, which will make it not work as well.
There are no known interactions between Zemdri and foods or drinks.
It is unknown if drinking alcohol will affect Zemdri, but heavy drinking can slow your immune response and make it harder for your body to fight infection.
Zemdri is given as an infusion into a vein, every 24 to 48 hours. A healthcare provider will give your first dose and may teach you how to properly use the medication by yourself.
Read and carefully follow any Instructions for Use provided with your medicine. Do not use Zemdri if you don't understand all instructions for proper use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions.
Zemdri is usually given for 4 to 7 days. Follow your doctor's dosing instructions very carefully.
Drink plenty of liquids while you are using Zemdri.
You may need frequent blood or urine tests. Your hearing, kidney function, and nerve function may also need to be checked.
Store in the refrigerator, do not freeze.
Each vial (bottle) is for one use only. Throw it away after one use, even if there is still medicine left inside.
Use a needle and syringe only once and then place them in a puncture-proof "sharps" container. Follow state or local laws about how to dispose of this container. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
Zemdri kills certain types of bacteria by preventing them from making proteins.
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Zemdri can harm your kidneys, and may also cause nerve damage or hearing loss.
